FAI Junior Cup 6th Round:

Weekend of 31 Jan/1 Feb

FAI Umbro Junior Cup 6th Round

FAI Umbro Junior Cup holders, Carrick United, survived a tense and competitive contest with Athenry FC to advance to the final sixteen of the competition.

The teams were obliged to decide the issue with a penalty shoot-out after they had drawn 1-1 and Carrick came through 3-2 against a strong Athenry who were losing finalists in 2006.

Carrick beat Dublins representatives, Killester United, in last seasons final and Ballymun United, who defeated Killester in the current competition, are still going strong.

Ballymun were one of Dublins survivors to the round of sixteen when they travelled to Rathkeale and beat the locals by three goals.

The challenge from Limerick is certain to be a considerable one this season with Fairview Rangers and Janesboro leading the way.

Fairview, winners of the Cup three seasons in succession from 2002, beat Redcastle FC, from Inishowen, 2-0 and Janesboro out-scored a powerful St. Michaels 3-0.

Iorras Aonthaithe (Erris United) made home venue tell when they entertained another Limerick side, Pike Rovers, in Sligo and triumphed 3-0.
