Despite the 3-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Australia in Thomond Park on August 12, the Republic of Ireland remain in a strong position in group 8 of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. A points tally of 13 points from seven qualifiers so far in the campaign keeps Ireland in the hunt for the South Africa finals in 2010. The team is just one point behind World Champions, Italy, who do have a game in hand. Ireland have just three games of the qualifying group remaining, Cyprus away on September 5 and Italy and Montenegro in Croke Park on October 10 and 14 respectively.
