Mr John O'Donovan RIP

With great sadness I learned of the untimely passing of a "True Soccer Man" yesterday, Sunday 19th Jan, Mr John O'Donovan, Assistant Treasurer of Munster Football Association and Member of The FAI Junior Council.

John had been actively involved in Soccer locally since the early 1960s when he became involved in the Inter House with O'Brien Spinners and subsequently with Glasheen AFC through the strong Glasheen connection in O'Brien's. From Glasheen John became involved in the Munster Senior League Committee and took on the job of Fixtures Secretary until 1986, just before he was elected to the MFA Committee in 1987 and later to the FAI Junior Council, posts he held upon his death.

It's said that John missed very few meetings of The MFA since his first election and indeed attended his final meeting only 3 short days before his passing.

Local Soccer Historian and Friend, Plunkett Carter described John as "an inspiration and father figure to all during his 50 year productive association with Munster football. he had no favourites and will be remembered by administrators and club delegates for the efficiency and courtesy shown throughout his lengthy career". A sentiment that emphasises the true integrity of a "Great Man", who was a true friend to all Referees and indeed the whole Soccer Fraternity of Ireland.

May we extend our Deepest and Heartfelt Sympathy to his Wife Charlotte and Children, David, Noel, Gerard, Sharon and Brian and this sad time.
